Sunderland defeat has hurt us too, Newcastle United defender Mathieu Debuchy ... - Telegraph.co.uk

Newcastle's heaviest home defeat to their rivals since 1979 has angered supporters whose patience with an underperforming side has snapped.

Despite Newcastle hovering just above the relegation zone for much of the season, their loyal followers had continued to back manager Alan Pardew and the players, but the goodwill has disappeared in the aftermath of Sunday's humiliation against Sunderland.

Some have even called for Pardew to be sacked and while that view has not gained widespread momentum on Tyneside, the 51-year-old and his players have discovered the brutal price of surrendering bragging rights as they look to earn the three extra points that will all but guarantee their Premier League status.

"I can understand that it's very difficult for them, but it's also very difficult for us to take a 3-0 defeat like that," said Debuchy, one of five players making their Tyne-Wear derby debut. "But I just want to tell them that we really need their support, it's really important for us so I hope they'll stay with us. We're going to fight until the end.

"We've got a great character in there, this week we'll get out there and get down to work and make sure we win as many games as we can until the end of the season."

Meanwhile, Adam Johnson hopes his goal at St James' Park, Sunderland's crucial second, will help repay the club's supporters for sticking by him during a poor first season following a £10 million move from Manchester City.

"To score goals is an amazing feeling, especially to score against your arch rivals at their home ground," Johnson said. "That killed the game off, which gave me a great feeling and it gave something back to the fans because they haven't see a lot of good football over the last few weeks and probably the whole season."
