LSU Football 2013 Spring Game: Zach Mettenberger Shows Great Maturity at QB

An estimated total of 28,000 fans filled Tiger Stadium on Saturday afternoon for LSU's annual spring football scrimmage.

The majority of those 28,000 fans had their eyes glued on this LSU football team and one player in particular: senior-to-be quarterback Zach Mettenberger.

After an up-and-down junior campaign in 2012, all eyes were on Mettenberger on Saturday as fans wanted to see how their quarterback had improved this offseason.

If Saturday was any implication of what's to come, Mettenberger and this LSU offense should be just fine in the upcoming 2013 season.

Mettenberger, or "Met" as his teammates call him, was brilliant in the controlled scrimmage. He completed 12-of-19 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns while leading his White team to a 37-0 rout over the Purple team.

After a slow start in the first quarter, Mettenberger came alive midway through the second quarter when he hit tight end Dillon Gordon on a perfect play-action pass for a 15-yard touchdown strike to give the White team a 9-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, he dropped back and hit Odell Beckham Jr. down the sideline for a 79-yard touchdown bomb on the first play of the drive.

On the following drive, Mettenberger hooked up with Jarvis Landry on several nice passes, which only helped but to assure this LSU passing game has all the pieces needed to be explosive in the upcoming season.

Play after play and drive after drive, Mettenberger showed poise and maturity out on the field while leading this LSU offense.

He has developed exceptional chemistry with both Beckham Jr. and Landry, who are expected to be LSU's starting wide receivers this season. He also showed signs of development with his tight ends, which is something that was nearly invisible throughout last season.

More important than anything, he showed leadership and maturity out on the field on Saturday. He didn't let a slow start get him down, but instead, he put on a passing clinic throughout the rest of the game while leading his team to a blowout victory in the scrimmage.

There are probably still those who doubt Mettenberger. But truth be told, there are certain quarterbacks who fold under pressure, and then there are those who simply learn from their mistakes and rise to the challenge.
