Collection Move Speculation Increases - Collection World

Since news appeared that Arsene Wenger might be offered a sizable amount of cash in the summer shift window, a massive number of different players have now been connected to the emirates, as well as the potential for some players to be interesting. The International Business Times talked of fascination with several people recently, most notably Jovetic, and Aubameyang. However Fiorentina has noted placed a?25.3 million pound sign on his head. Although this is a lot of money, it might be the sort of signing Arsenal desperately need to add a new dimension to their assault. In the present 4-3-3 development Arsenal play Jovetic could remain perfectly up top, however don?t expect him to stay their, with his type of play he will go around the four and behind midfield to give a genuine problem to defenders. He'd also link up very effectively with Giroud in a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 creation offering wonderful link up play with the Frenchman. Wenger could even perform a 4-2-3-1 with Jovetic as the main character. He also bridges the age difference issue, at 23 he's recently been playing first team baseball for Fiorentina for five years, and a proceed to the Premier League is the perfect step for Jovetic. But at?25.3 will Wenger spend the the money? If Jovetic does sign for Arsenal, will Aubameyang sign also, well if Arsenal are planning to create a serious force for winners league football next year they will need both Jovetic and Aubameyang, luckily for them the transfer cost for Aubameyang will only be round the?8.5 million mark. Amorebieta, 28 can also be yet another likely target for Wenger and together with his agreement ending in 2014 this might be the ideal time for Athletic Bilboa to profit on the key defense. As points form up this summer must visit a lot of movement for Arsenal in the transfer market, and Arsenal fans will be very happy to hear this. But Arsenal and Wenger have already been proven to guarantee without delivering in the exchange window. Who'd you like to see Arsenal indication? Have your say below. Source: DSG

Calling Fact or Fiction on Arsenal January Deadline Day Rumors

The Gunners have little choice but to reinforce their squad with fresh legs and quality. The fact is that, with normal injuries and fatigue, Arsenal are probably not strong or deep enough to finish in the top four.

With almost any other club, multiple cost-effective signings would have been brought in by now to inject some energy and freshness into the team. But this is Arsenal, and, as such, Arsene Wenger has not recruited a single player.

However, the media knows how important it is for the Gunners to bring in at least one new face, so, despite Wenger's stubbornness, the rumors have not ceased.

It's only natural to wonder if David Beckham training with Arsenal means a move to North London is on the cards. After all, the Gunners could use the midfield reinforcement, especially from someone of his stature.

But, for better or worse, he won't be suiting up in the Emirates Stadium. And I'd argue that it's the former, considering how much Beckham struggled to keep up with the pace of MLS last season, which is glacial compared to the Premier League.

The bottom line is that, while Beckham is a free agent and can be signed even after the transfer window shuts, he is still months away from fitness, according to Arsene Wenger (via The BBC). The manager added that "there's no speculation about signing or anything."

It would certainly make sense for Mohamed Diame to move to Arsenal from a financial perspective. With a paltry reported release clause of a reported £3.5 million (via The Mirror), it would not take a lot for the Senegalese to provide return on investment.

However, it's likely that Arsene Wenger would deem him surplus to requirements from the moment he arrived at London Colney.

While Arsenal could use a strong defensive midfielder of Diame's ilk, Wenger has been loathe to employ one this season. Rather, he's opted for the metronomic pivote Mikel Arteta, who has been consistently outstanding. And in the Spaniard's absence, Aaron Ramsey has done a fine job filling in.

So while the critical financial part of the equation is solved in Diame's case, he is probably not the best tactical fit.

The powerful striker has put Aston Villa on his back at times this season, scoring twice as many goals as anyone else on the team and providing more assists than any of his teammates.

Olivier Giroud is the only true striker that Arsenal have, and certainly the only physical option that the Gunners have up front. Benteke would give Arsene Wenger an option off the bench late in games to add a totally different dimension.

He's 19 years old, he's developing rapidly, he's technically proficient, he's an attacking midfielder and his coach admits that Arsenal would be "a perfect club for him."

Maher is still a teenager, so he wouldn't have the immediate impact that Arsene Wenger would look for as he tries to reinforce his team for a tough run down the stretch.

Plus, Arsenal have lots of attacking midfielders, even if they are injury prone. Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky all like to play at the tip of midfield, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be transitioning there soon. So this doesn't make sense.

As much as Arsenal fans would like this to be true, the sooner they reconcile themselves with the fact that David Villa is not coming to North London, the sooner they'll go through the five stages of grief.

There is always a fair amount of brinkmanship and veiling of intentions that occurs during transfer season, but this one looks to be well and truly dead.

Nevertheless, The Times, a very reputable source, claims that Arsenal are in for an £8 million bid. And The BBC's David Ornstein claims that Arsenal are still hot on Villa's trail.

Don't get your hopes up, though. The signing would be a steal if the Gunners could pull it off, but as Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has said for weeks, expect David Villa to remain at the Camp Nou.

Europa League: English groups may still master Europe

Three English teams will soon be contesting in Thursdayas Europa League wrap and most people are desperate to produce a point for themselves. This season, the most effective groups from England failed miserably in Europeas elite opposition a.k.a. the Champions League. Chelsea and Manchester City (more about them later) were pulled out in the group phases. Manchester United went out of the competition against Real Madrid despite being the greater team while Arsenal continue to be in the competition but (almostAcertainly) itas only a matter of time before theyare knocked out as well. Much has been written and said about Premier Leagueas lack of quality due to what happened to the most truly effective sides. Therefore, it's a test for other three English groups, who are still competing for European glory (albeit lesser model) to prove a place for themselves and for the position of the league as well. A very important thing is most of the three groups are wanting to do something better in this competition and are not taking it lightly. Why should they? Chelsea will travel to Romania to handle Steaua Bucharest. The Blues failed to defend their Champions League prize this term and were left out in the group phases. For that reason, itas an added problem for the Europa League title to be clinched by them. Winning two back to back European trophies (whatever format) is a matter of satisfaction really. After dealing with a tumultuous season, in addition, it will give a chance to them to end the campaign on a higher note. If they can manage a top four end (which is their major priority) and case two servings (still living in the FA Cup) by the end of the season, it'll certainly be a successful season. Similarly, the prize means a great deal for Tottenham and Andre Villas-Boas specially. This has been an amazing time for the North Londoners therefore far however the work is still far from over. They've a set of features from here on nevertheless the only focus is now set on beating Inter Milan, their adversary for today. Concluding in top four is their first priority and they're greatly on course to attain that dream. Further, a trophy at the end of the growing season is going to do their confidence (also, Villas-Boasa application) an environment of good. Newcastle United will travel to Russia to handle Anzhi Makhachkala. The Magpies have did not surpass the expectations this year, after doing so well last period. After five new January employees resulting in improvement in results and the club is looking forward to advance further in the Europa League the sombre mood at Tyneside has been replaced by great anticipation. Well thereas no hiding from the fact English clubs have fared miserably in Champions League but a whole lot could be said definitely if a successful journey can be made by these clubs in the Europa League, starting with tonightas activities. Also begin to see the Europa Category Round of 16 First Knee Survey.

How to Survive a Baseball Game at Estadio Azteca : The Newest Yorker

In preparation for joining Tuesdayas World Cup qualifier between Mexico and the Usa, I was ordered to be subtle. The game had been played in Mexico City, at Estadio Azteca, in front of higher than a hundred thousand Mexican basketball fans, therefore I shouldnat wear red, white, and blue. So she advised a cap, my haircut, I was told by a Mexican friend, was also American. Walking in to the stadium we found a coach of American fans being protected with a line of police. Because straps weren't allowed inside, my pants were hanging low. aThat way you canat hit some one with it, and your fists are busy hiking your pants up,a a British expat living in Mexico City speculated. Despite a on the JumboTron to set geopolitics aside, a sizable portion of the arena booed aThe Star Spangled Bannera; the booing just grew louder as the Americans, clearly the poor squad, were able to stifle each attack by the Mexican staff. Tensions reached a peak midway through the next half, when a penalty kick could have been granted to Mexico but wasnat. As imagined by Hollywood, except the shower of arrows was replaced by glasses of kernels and beer of popcorn, covered with warm sauce, being cast from the top of deck, I turned around and looked as much as find myself in the center of a Medieval stress. By nightas end, the U.S. had acquired, 0a'0. Thatas how it felt, at least. In substantial matches at Estadio Azteca, the Americans have never won. They certainly were successful a year ago, for the very first time ever, however the fit was an amiable game, with neither staff using its most useful players, and the ground was half full. This time, Azteca was offered out: the only clear pieces established an L-shaped stream of unsold seats around the lines in the upper deck reserved for the traveling corps of American football fans who call themselves the Outlaws. (Their other flank was protected by a wall, and police.) Azteca is big and loud, and found at this type of lung-challenging altitude, that the knowledge is unparalleled for visiting teams in regards to unpleasantness. The Americans have not been the only ones to challenge there: in the significantly more than seventy World Cup qualifiers played at Azteca, Mexico has lost only once. That history is owed at the very least in some portion to Mexicoas fanbase. I sat with several regional fans; they were friends, and, I thought, mild-mannered, which made the fact that they yelled aPuto!aa'a word whose particular English interpretation no-one can totally agree on, but it isnat kinda'as each American person walked out of the canal for warmups somewhat alarming. Combined with remaining portion of the ground, together, they yelled aPuto!a each time the American goalie knocked the ball, all through every place kick, and at some other time that seemed appropriate. When they got bored with aputo,a they switched to aculero,a which everybody agreed equals aasshole.a (In more optimistic times, they chanted, aSi, se puede.a) The fans only grew louder throughout the game, having been well lubricated: our seats were in-front of a beer seller, who allowed our group to open a tab, and passed us a statement on a of cardboard at the end of the game. There were, I was informed, four thousand police officers at the overall game, one for every twenty-five fansa'or, maybe more accurately, eight or nine for every American. I felt somewhat nervous, sitting in the reduced deck, ten rows behind a wall topped with barbed wire. During corners, several policemen stood close to the kicker and organized riot guards to help keep any projectiles from increasing. Some body in the ground had a particularly strong laser pointer, that they might direct toward the field any moment the Mexican fans were fallen to the ground in agony, something by an American player immediately presumed to be phony. Earlier in your day, once we were maneuvering to the match, an friendas landlord had told us an account concerning the aftermath of a game by which Argentina had beaten Mexico. Two Argentinian fans started enjoying boisterously nearby, and a few Mexican fans approached and started beating them up. The Argentines discovered many police and called to them for help. The other way was looked by the officers. On Tuesday evening, American lovers seated in the supportersa part described thrown beers and, in one or more case, injury. The Americans were likely far from innocent, and there are possibly classes in humility, or, at the very least, warning, to be learned. Wherever I sat, surrounded on all sides by Mexican supporters but wearing beige and gray in place of draped in an American flag, there is no difficulty. The match was vastly discouraging for Mexico, which now faces a difficult road to World Cup qualification, but the only commentary I got afterward was from a Mexican lover who tapped me on the neck and, before I could raise my arms to guard myself, said, aGood match.a I mustered most of the Spanish I could to tell him his equipo was mejor, and that the Americans had simply gotten luckya'which they'd, having been outplayed for much of the match and preserved at least one time with a whistle, or lack thereof. And yet, the U.S. now finds itself in a powerful position to be eligible for its seventh straight World Cup, an accomplishment whose problem American fans usually donat recognize. But itas anything theyave arrive at assume, and with great reason: lacking next yearas Cup, in Brazil, when the games will undoubtedly be performed more or less in American prime time, could be disastrous for American soccer, despite all of the development itas made recently. American fans aren't as significant as their competitors, and playing matches at the Rose Bowl isn't as difficult for competitors as visiting Azteca, but actions are being made. The teamas success in that hostile environment was remarkable, but games like this are a prerequisite for success in international soccer. With limited blood poured, Tuesday was still another step on the trail to getting the basketball worldas respect. Top-20 wealthiest? Newcastle claim invest earth elite with latest money numbers - Mirror.co.uk

Income bill went up by 20 per cent, but the general news is covered in gravy for the Toon - even with cold season ticket prices Activity Newcastle said to be one of the world's top 20 wealthiest clubs, after revealing noise economic benefits today. Manager Alan Pardew is set for more support in summer time shift industry on the rear of a solid performance off the message, as well as on it. The St James' Park club increased their turnover to A93.3million this past year (up 5.4%) improved by bonus money for finishing a surprise fifth in the Premier League. The club say that places them in the elite world segment of top making football clubs, with a further boost coming with information that they made a profit for the next straight year, this time of A1.4 million. The only down side to this is really a 2,000 escalation in the wage bill to A64.1m after stars including Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba and Pappis Cisse bolstered the squad. That puts the club's wages-to-turnover at 68.7%, an increase of 8.1% on this past year, and at the top end of the necessary range. The figures, for the financial year ending on June 30, 2012, show the club is making strides towards stability off the pitch. And in addition they show a rare exemplory instance of a team compromising revenue to keep ticket prices down. The average attendance at St James' Park increased to 49,936 - 2,190 up - but ticket income fell by 1 week after a time ticket price freeze, and cheaper seven and ten year longterm discounts being offered. These initiatives swelled the number of season ticket holders to the best degree since 2007 and this season's average gate will top 50,000. TELEVISION income grew by 14.6%, with that number set to increase dramatically with next season's tv rights deal which ensures prime trip clubs a minimum of A60m a year. Industrial revenue fell by 12.7%, although the latest figures don't include revenue from the club's new deal with Wonga. That alliance, which will be efficient from the 2013/14 time, "represents a significant increase on the club's past professional agreements", the club say. This past year Newcastle made an overall gain of A32.6m, were considerably enhanced by the A35m purchase of Andy Carroll to Liverpool.

GolfBlogger Enters Tenth Year

With all of the things going on right now, it appears that I have missed the birthday—blogiversary, if you will—of GolfBlogger.Com. The first GolfBlogger post appeared on March 22, 2004.

It has been a very busy year, both personally and professionally. The blogging highlight is that I published three books: two on golf, and one a history of Halloween horrors.

I also had the opportunity this past year to attend the USGA's Senior Open as a member of the media, and the LPGA's Jamie Farr event in Toledo. Both were incredible experiences that I treasure. Another highlight: I finally managed to meet my friend-in-golf-blogging, Tony Korologos, of Hooked on Golf Blog. Tony was on a junket to Michigan and I met him at the Black Lake course in Onaway. He was, as I expected, a real gentleman and beat me soundly in our match.

Finally, I managed to get to Myrtle Beach for the first time to play several courses, notably Greg Norman's track at Barefoot Landing.

In the past year, I've published 1,127 posts, bringing the grand total to 8,875 and somewhere around 8 million words.  In doing so, I continue to avoid the fate of thousands of others who have started a golf blog—that of writing a few pieces and then losing interest; the internet is littered with the corpses of abandoned blogs. And yet, through it all, GolfBlogger remains a part-time effort. I teach high school as my day job, and although the end of my teaching career is in sight, I cannot yet turn GolfBlogger into a full time job (although that surely is the goal).

During the life of the blog, I've also published some 5,000 twitter posts and this year was recognized by the social metric firm Kred as being in the top 5% of internet influencers.

Most of the success of GolfBlogger is, I think, due to sheer stubbornness on my part. I write every day, nearly without fail (there is the occasional weekend lapse). GolfBlogger is, to my knowledge, the second oldest golf blog (the other is less than two months older), and perhaps the oldest continuously publishing. When I started, there really were no models to follow. I did not want to turn it into a site that simply reprinted news on the PGA Tour (and I'm glad I didn't, for there are far too many of those now). Instead, my models were Instapundit, Gizmodo and BoingBoing. Like Instapundit, I decided to offer short, pithy comments and links to (golf) news; as with Gizmodo, I planned to link to new (golf) products and review them; and following BoingBoing's lead, I would simply write about and link to (golf related) things that interest me or that I found cool. Finally, as with any blog, I would offer observations on life—in this case, my golfing life.

I've kept the blog going because I love to write. Before I changed careers to become a teacher, I was a professional editor and ghostwriter. I also love golf, so the match was a natural. In fact, I find that writing for GolfBlogger has become a compulsion.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the many, many thousands who make a habit of visiting the site, and the sponsors who make it financially possible for me to keep it all going.

His ultimate word: Robin van Persie says Manchester United will undoubtedly be his last club - Mirror.co.uk

It's a club with a sense for older participants, says the Holland expert who has broken his goalscoring issues any way you like through the break Getty Robin van Persie has declared that Manchester United will undoubtedly be his last club. Van Persie, 29, is a huge thought in his first period at United following his A24million move from Arsenal last summer. The Holland striker has scored 23 ambitions in 38 games for Sir Alex Ferguson's side and said he expects to complete his career at Old Trafford. Talking to Voetbal International, van Persie said: "The coming years it is Manchester United. And perhaps longer. United would be my last team. "You have a number of clubs in Europe where older people can find it good, where they're appreciated. You used to have that at Juventus and AC Milan, Manchester United today is a good example. Usually are not knows how long I remain at the club. "I have every single day at United a fresh concern. My progress is definitely an continuous process. That gets an additional boost if you are surrounded by new coaches and teammates, all with their own some ideas, in a completely new environment." An armful: Robin Van Persie of Netherlands honors with team spouse Arjen Robben Dean Mouhtaropoulos Van Perise has won just once in his last 10 games for United but netted 3 x for Holland through the break, overpowering Johan Cruyff with 34 targets for his country.

Manchester United 'goal' Mario Gotze available to exchange - The Independent

German wonderkid Mario Gotze has suggested he could be available to a proceed to one of Europeas top clubs, with Manchester United recommended as a possible spot. The Borussia Dortmund winger was in form for his country last week, as Joachim Lowas guys glided past Kazakhstan in Nuremberg 4-1. His sideas cause was helped by him together with his sixth international target, contributing to the seven group goals he has for his club within an extraordinary year thus far. Despite dominating the Bundesliga for days gone by two seasons, Dortmund appear to have surrendered the title to Bayern Munich now. A successful Champions League function may have padded domestic disappointments, but Gotze may feel he needs to leave to help expand a career. He said: aClubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United are attractive, and playing in another top league would shape me and help me develop as a player. But I am perhaps not convinced that far ahead at the moment. I'm happy in Germany and am happy with just how things are getting. Whatever else remains quite a distance off." A new long-term contract was only signed by the youngster last year, but with the departure of Shinji Kagawa for United last summer, and the possible shift of Robert Lewandowski, Jurgan Klopp will find it difficult to convince one of his true outstanding crown jewels to remain.

What Happened Last Night: The NFL Hands Out Awards And Elects New Hall Of Famers

Today may be Super Bowl Sunday, but the NFL was still very active the night before. Not with games, mind you, but with accolades. Let's take a look at who got what and why.

In what must not have been a big surprise for most considering the huge season he had, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson took home the MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards last night, beating out Peyton Manning as the runner-up for each. Peterson is the first running back to win MVP since LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006, and the first player to win MVP and OPY since Tom Brady in 2010. With the year Peterson had, though, it should have come as no surprise. The back rushed for 2,096 yards on 6.0 yards per carry and 12 touchdowns in leading the Minnesota Vikings to the playoffs this year.

Elsewhere, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt won Defensive Player of the Year with 49 of 50 first-place votes. Watt finished the season with 20.5 sacks, 81 tackles, and 16 passes blocked. The only other player to receive a first-place vote was Denver's Von Miller. Ironically, Miller won Defensive Rookie of the Year last season with Watt nowhere near contention.

Bruce Arians won Coach of the Year for his success coaching the Indianapolis Colts this season, helping them come back from a 2-14 season last year to go 11-5 this season, including 9-3 with him at the helm. Arians is the first interim head coach to win the award; he was filling in for Chuck Pagano, who missed most of the season receiving treatment for leukemia. Arians has since been hired by the Arizona Cardinals.

The inductees for this year's class of Hall of Famers was announced, and the list did not disappoint. There are seven inductees this year: coach Bill Parcells, defensive lineman Warren Sapp, receiver Cris Carter, offensive linemen Jonathan Ogden and Larry Allen, and a pair of senior selections, Curley Culp and Dave Robinson.

Parcells coached the New York Giants, New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Dallas Cowboys over 19 years in the NFL, winning Super Bowls with the Giants in 1987 and 1991 and taking the Patriots to one in 1996. He finishes his career with a record of 172-130-1.

Sapp recorded 96.5 sacks over his 13-year career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders. He also won the 1999 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award after helping lead Tampa Bay to its first division title in 18 years. Sapp also won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay in 2002 over Oakland before actually joining the Raiders two seasons later.

Carter played 16 seasons for Philadelphia, Minnesota, and Miami, becoming only the second player in NFL history to reach 1,000 receptions in a career, finishing with 1,101 for 13,899 and 130 touchdowns. Although he never made it to a Super Bowl, his pairing with Randy Moss in Minnesota during the late '90s/early '00s created one of the most dangerous receiving duos in NFL history.

Allen played 203 games over 14 seasons, all but two seasons of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, with whom he won a Super Bowl in 1995. He played every position on the offensive line except center and was a first-team All-Pro seven straight seasons. He was also inducted into the Cowboys' Ring of Honor in 2011.

Ogden played all 12 seasons of his career with the Baltimore Ravens, winning a Super Bowl with them in 2001. Ogden was a six-time All-Pro and was voted to 11 Pro Bowls.

Culp was a defensive stalwart for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1960s and '70s, and also played for the Houston Oilers and Detroit Lions. He started at tackle in Kansas City's Super Bowl win over Vikings in 1970 and was selected to six Pro Bowls.

"Curley was a dominating force on the defensive line for the Super Bowl IV championship team and one of many great players that helped build the tradition and foundation of the Kansas City Chiefs," the team's chairman and CEO, Clark Hunt, said in a statement. "We look forward to seeing him take his rightful place in Canton."

Robinson played on the powerhouse Green Bay teams of the 1960s, starting at outside linebacker on coach Vince Lombardi's two Super Bowl champions. He closed his 12-year career with the Washington Redskins.

"He was such a vital part of those great defenses in the 1960s," said Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy. "Dave's contributions to the Packers have not been limited to the field, as he has also been a great ambassador for the organization over the years. We are thrilled that he received this honor."

Arsenal Turn To Benefit from QPRs Impending Relegation...

Frank Samba of QPR (Google Innovative Commons) QPR is possibly among the groups directed from the Premier League this season, as the London club are seven items adrift of safety with only eight suits remaining in the season. Regardless of the arrivals of stars like Loic Remy and Christopher Samba, the club could be looking down the barrel in a few months time. According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are trying to take advantage of the relegation by keeping tabs on Remy and Samba. Those two participants were asked to participate the West London wardrobe with some serious money. They are considered to be receiving around A100,000 each week in wages, that will be an unsustainable amount of money even in the Premier League for a club like QPR. As a result, they might be forced into selling their January signings if they're directed. Arsenal will likely be in industry for a defense and a striker. Furthermore, both Remy and Samba have been on the eyes of Arsenal for a while now. However, they have been struggling to take the plunge and sign them. Wenger, though, will soon be thinking about the likelihood of convincing Remy particularly after having seen the striker adjust well to English football. He's previously scored three goals for QPR in only five suits. Samba has been an Arsenal target even if he was a Blackburn person. Because the opponent has been able to shore up the QPR support instantly upon his arrival, little has changed since that time. QPR had admitted around two goals per game ahead of Sambaas arrival, nevertheless they have been conceding just one single purpose game since his arrival. Remy is considered to have put a million relegation launch clause in his contract. Samba could be readily available for around A12 million a' the fee paid by Rangers to the Russian team Anzhi Makhachkala. . Bookmark the .

Cheick Tiote: We're still not safe in the Premier League - ChronicleLive

Cheick Tiote is today issuing a fresh Newcastle United battle-cry as the season hits the final straight – insisting: "We're still not safe in the Premier League."

And the Ivory Coast warrior says he won't change his style of play when it comes to ensuring the Magpies secure survival during the final eight games of the campaign.

United head to Manchester City on Saturday with a six- point gap between themselves and the final relegation place, currently occupied by Wigan Athletic.

The Latics have what could be a crucial game in hand and Tiote is keen to seal top-flight safety sooner rather than later, before the nerves begin to jangle in what is always a fiercely-contested April period.

Tiote told the Chronicle: "I think we have more work to do. You never know what can happen. The Premier League is so, so different to any other league in the world.

Tiote has cleaned his act up on the disciplinary front after four games without a booking – something he has done twice this season. However, he has still picked up 11 yellow cards and one red, already matching last term's total.

When asked if he would consider adapting his game, he said: "That's me. If I change I am not going to be the same player.  I just need to keep doing my job. That is the best thing for me."

Tiote is currently in his third season for the Magpies after arriving from FC Twente in 2009, and he has been a crowd favourite ever since. Now he wants to continue building a rapport with United fans.

Tiote will be back on Tyneside this week after starring for the Ivory Coast in their 3-0 win against Gambia over the weekend in a World Cup qualifier.

United No 9 Papiss Cisse also played 13 minutes for Senegal, replacing former team-mate Demba Ba in the 1-1 draw with Angola.

Meanwhile, Mapou Yanga- Mbiwa, Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko are all training in Paris today ahead of France's crunch World Cup clash with Spain.

And Steven Taylor remains with Roy Hodgson's England squad for tomorrow's game with Montenegro in Podgorica, after sitting out the 8-0 win over San Marino on Friday as an unused sub.

He left United in 2001 after winning three Premier League games and a Champions League champions medal in three glorious years at Old Trafford. GOING DUTCH: Ferguson with defender Jaap Stam in 1998 Jaap Stam is to create a distress come back to Manchester United. Tottenham Hotspur: 5 Largest Summer Shift Targets for Andre Villas-Boas - Bleacher Survey

Following on from last weekas general look at Tottenham Hotspuras transport activity in the coming months, we now take a look at what might be Andre Villas-Boasa largest goals in the market this summer. There's a whole lot still to happen this year that could have implications here, particularly related to the quality of signings Tottenham will make. Whatever happens, you will find areas in the team that already can be referred to as needing attention. Competition for Places on the Wings Aaron Lennon.Michael Regan/Getty Photos Gareth Baleas potential is to be a concern for a while, and with plenty written and spoken about it already, that issue won't be rehashed here. It is quite obvious Tottenham will not be eager to offer him, especially if they be eligible for the Champions League. Whether Bale remains or not, Villas-Boas could be willing to create in some additional opposition out wide in midfield, with Spurs relying therefore heavily on the Welshman and Aaron Lennon. Baleas deployment in central roles has meant he is no longer considered primarily as a winger. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Clint Dempsey are among those at the club who've covered out left in his absence there and given steady to good company. But none could really reproduce the rapid danger supplied by Bale and Lennon down the flanks, nor the total amount it offers the team. Andros Townsenda'currently on mortgage at Queens Park Rangersa'could very well see his game time increased next season on the back of his type with the Hoops. Increased effort for the 21-year-old would increase the depth in the career, a thing that Spurs are spending for with Lennon's current injury (less we forget, he has had issues in subsequent months too). Nevertheless, Villas-Boas may still like to bring in more rate for the positioning, particularly in left wing if he hopes to continue with Bale centrally. Even if Spurs' model changes, their rate has established such a fruitful feature of the game, it would be described as a shame to allow them to go from this. An Upgraded for Friedel as Potential Backup for Lloris Brad Friedel.Marco Luzzani/Getty Pictures His status have been cemented by hugo Lloris as Tottenhamas first-choice goalkeeper. Their intention was confirmed by the club to keep Brad Friedel as his backup into next season giving him a contract extension. It's important Villas-Boas begins thinking about he will be replaced by who whilst the next competition for Lloris, with the frequent owner most likely to retire following the 2013-14 campaign. Scotland Under-21 international Jordan Archer, presently on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, may be deemed sufficient to achieve success Friedel. Or even, there will be some interesting considerations regarding who'll come in. Goalkeeping fundamentals like shot-stopping and a general control of the penalty area would have been a requirement. With so much being made of Llorisa ability to behave as a brush when Spursa protection are found out too far forward, similar quickness and alertness may also be on the listing of qualities needed. Depth at Left-Back Danny Rose, on loan at Sunderland.Steve Bardens/Getty Pictures Left-back is just a place where in actuality the extent of the problem may well not even be obvious to Villas-Boas. If he's pleased with Benoit Assou-Ekotto as his beginning there, then it is generally an incident of the level behind the Cameroon international. Jan Vertonghen is just a great full-back, but Tottenham would rather him perform in his favored place of main defense. Kyle Naughton has covered out left also, and he is also better supported competitive on his normal flank out right, while he's improved on his weaker part. When his mortgage at Sunderland finishes Danny Rose could be ready to accept finding its way back and competing with Assou-Ekotto. However, having gotten use to more regular starts, the converted midfielder mightn't want to lose out any minutes any longer. Then there's January signing Zeki Fryers. The functional opponent has been receiving generally positive reviews for shows in Spursa Under-21 group. By August, Fryers may be prepared to claim for a first-team area. If he's maybe not, and Rose moves on, Villas-Boas features a few facts to consider in the position. Does he buy young, in search of an individual who may possibly become great? Or does he opportunity an even more experienced player to instantly challenge Assou-Ekotto? More Creativity? Lewis Holtby.Marco Luzzani/Getty Photographs Maybe this is simply not therefore much an objective as something for Villas-Boas to take into account. Tottenham have people in midfield who are able to move the ball and obtain the staff planning the best path. Mousa Dembele has been a standout here. Others like Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby have a watch for a pass, and provided more regular opportunities might become greater creative contributors in the group. The eye have been caught by tom Carroll with his the activity and vision he uses to have his group ticking (playing similarly to a edition of Luka Modric). Villas-Boas might decide Carroll, combined with the others mentioned, might have sufficient between them to get along side the more creatively direct function of his wingers and (hopefully more so again soon) his strikers. He may also consider his staff as lacking that fulcrum at its center, anyone to pull the strings and through whom therefore much of their play will go. Participants of true quality here are few and far between, but are usually a standard denominator in certain of the best sides around (some one like Wesley Sneijder in Inter Milan's treble time or David Silva at Manchester City). Spurs have already been connected with players of the ilk this seasona'Sneijder and Joao Moutinho's names having often popped up. They've got by pretty well without them, but certainly there have been instances when Villas-Boas' team may have done with someone with a unique comprehension of how exactly to uncover stubborn resistance defenses. Goals! Jermain Defoe.Shaun Botterill/Getty Photographs Tottenham's not enough goals recently from Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor has been seriously discussed already, and similar to the Bale situation, it's an interest that's produced most exhausting. Keeping it simple, Tottenham desire a goalscorer (or two) come early july. Regardless of what these forwards do prior to the year has gone out, if Villas-Boas is serious about moving on he needs somebody who can guarantee around a year to 20 goals. As for who can carry that, well, that is not too particular. Upfront is an region Spurs have fought for consistency in because the times of the Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane partnership. With reasonable copy from Defoe and then Darren Bent, they not just provided objectives, but an obvious identity of how the staff would work in the last third. In other jobs there has been a notion of what is best suited, but up top that has not been the case. Come july 1st what Villas-Boas chooses here probably ranks as his most important decision in the transfer market. Spurs might get by ok with the efforts of the others in the team, but without guaranteed in full targets (or as near that you can) their greater goals might struggle to be achieved. Jovetic in, Podolski out? - Arsenal World

There a rumblings about Lukas Podolski wanting out - frankly I'm not surprised. Despite having a good start and coming out of the blocks running, the German has been marginalised by being played out of position. He's a goalscorer - and a bloody good one at that - but he doesn't seem to be getting the opportunities.

"I've heard about Arsenal's interest," Jovetic was quoted as saying by The Sun. "It's a big pleasure for me to be on the radar of such a big club. I am happy about that.

It's not easy to replace van Persie, who scored a lot of goals. Arsenal have plenty of players who don't score like van Persie, but are also very good.

"They are still very strong. I often watch Premier League games on TV. It's one of the best leagues in the world and looks tempting for me. Maybe one day I will play there but I have a contract with Fiorentina and battling for a Champions League place in Serie A is the only thing I'm thinking about now."

No doubt by the time that any deals need to be done we'll be out-thought and out fought by other more decisive clubs.

Do I sound negative? - that's because at the moment I am, and I don't see any improvement at the club without major changes at board / management level.

Stevan Jovetic to System or Manchester Town? - Global Company Times

Montenegro's star-man Stevan Jovetic has dropped hints about his desire to perform in the Premier League, further lighting the dreams of Premier-League's "big boys" Arsenal and Man City. Currently playing for Fiorentina, the competent striker has forced 23 targets in his last 12 games, this new work of form a lot more than anything has pressed him to the very best of Wenger and Mancini's summer wish list. Small from actually asking to move to England, the Serie-A star could not do much more to let the Premier League know he is enthusiastic about an exchange. Jovetic has a A25 million buy-out term, and in a current interview said:AAaIt sure is good when you are exciting major clubs like Arsenal and Manchester City. aIt seems good since the EnglishAgameAcurrently has possibly the strongest category in the world. aIam really comfortable in Italy but the Premier League are at the top of the baseball world a' and possibly the best. Despite the routing Montenegro obtained from England in last Friday's world cup-qualifier, Jovetic himself had a fairly good game (when the ball got to his feet) and his club performance is what caught the Premier League's eye. It is no secret however that if it does fall to Mancini and Wenger, then the italian may lose no sleep over that bidding war.

Which Barcelona and Real Madrid Participants Would Begin at Bayern Munich? - Bleacher Report

Bayern Munich leader Uli Hoeness ruffled some feathers the other day when he put his team's individual people about on par with those from Real Madrid and Barcelona. Hoeness' prices have been substantially edited generally in most English places, lots of which have intended that he would not take Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo at Bayern. When asked which players from Barcelona and Real Madrid he thought would be welcome improvements to the Bayern group, he singled out Andres Iniesta and Jordi Alba.AHoeness added: "I think you can find only one or two Barca and Real players who'd begin for Bayern - [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi excluded." Strangely, the touch on Messi and Ronaldo has been omitted from several English-language media sources. It is frequently within the German press. It will also be outlined that Hoeness commented on which players he'd welcome to Bayern that would squeeze into the team, not who is "better" or "worse" than players in the German giants' team. To tell apart the big difference, consider Xavi. He might be better than some of Bayern's midfielders right now, but at 33 years, he will just declineAbetween now and his pending retirement. His value is overridden by age as a temporary improvement: his slow decline and approaching retirement makes him unattractive as a transfer option for leading clubs like Bayern. This might explain Hoeness' preference for Iniesta, a younger player of similarly stellar type. Having set the record straight about what Hoeness did and didn't say, his prices remain very interesting and are worth scrutiny. Are Alba and Iniesta the only two people from Barcelona or Real Madrid who would be described as a distinct intensify for Bayern? And could they themselves certainly be designated improvements? Neuer: Not really a step down from Casillas or ValdesManuel Queimadelos Alonso/Getty Pictures Starting with the goalkeeper position, neither Victor Valdes nor Iker Casillas is just a major improvement upon Manuel Neuer. Both inside their 30s, the Spanish stoppers are approaching the normal physical decline. And although Casillas is world-class, therefore is Neuer. The argument as to which is the better goalkeeper is irrelevant: The straightforward the reality is that both are great and there could be no reason behind Bayern to risk getting Casillas to a tradition and new category. At right-back, Bayern have their captain and a world-class ability in Philipp Lahm. Alvaro Arbeloa is the smallest player in the True Madrid beginning lineup, and would be ideal to Bayern just as a copy. Dani Alves is half the player he was in 2009; he's used in the actions of compatriots Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaka in beginning his decline prematurely. In main defense, Bayern's most readily useful set includes Dante and Holger Badstuber, with Jerome Boateng on the bench. Barca's best are Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique; Javier Mascherano is really a homeless keeping midfielder. Real Madrid have Sergio Ramos, Pepe and Raphael Varane. Puyol, on account of his turning 35 next month, is is usually injured and nearing the conclusion of an illustrious career. He will be sorely missed at Barca when he retires, but can do little for another leading club. As Pepe has established time and time again in big games for club and place, his insufficient ball skills make him a poor choice against important teamsa'the very type Bayern play on a regular basis in the Bundesliga. Peek and Ramos, along with Pepe, all are extremely vunerable to being orange carded. Although the loves of Thiago Silva and Mats Hummelsa'truly great defendersa'will only be ordered a few times in a season, they average about the same number of dismissals. Raise has been yellow carded 73 times and been dismissed on seven occasions in 315 shows in his career. Ramos' reservations tally at a staggering 152 yellow and 16 red cards in 456 career outings. Dante (56 yellows, five reds in 252 appearances) and Badstuber (44 yellows and two reds in 279 appearances) play more precisely and have run in certain of the greatest defenses in Bundesliga history (Bayern have conceded just 36 goals since the beginning of the 2011-12 year). Again, there is very little of an improvementa'if anya'by putting Pique and/or Ramos, therefore there could be no point in risking taking both to a fresh group and culture. Varane is really a different story. Bayern needed to signal him from Lens in 2011, and he is the kind of player that Breno was allowed to be. Still monthly from his 20th birthday, Varane has done brilliantly against Barcelona, and Real Madrid's record of goals admitted with him and an Ricardo Carvalho in security is substantially better than with Ramos and Pepe. Hoeness made an error in maybe not singling out Varane as a person who would be a good signing for Bayern. Varane: The main one who got awayJasper Juinen/Getty Images Seeking to the left-backs, Bayern have a gem in David Alaba. It's possible to argue whether he, Jordi Alba, Fabio Coentrao or Marcelo is the better, but there is no denying that the Austriana'who is still just two decades olda'has the absolute most room for development set alongside the others, who are all 24 or older. Alaba wear virtuoso exhibits for Bayern in the Champions League against Real Madrid last year and is rapidly becoming among the world's best left-backs. Significantly, he's equally qualified in defense and attack. In this regard, Hoeness is dead wrong: Bayern haven't any importance of Jordi Alba. In key midfield, Bayern's most readily useful are Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez and Toni Kroos. Barca have Xavi, whose years as stated make him a poor prospect, along with Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta. True have Xabi Alonsoa'who at 31 can also be discounted being an needless playera'as effectively as Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil. Schweinsteiger, Bayern's vice-captain, is a lock. He is amazingly versatile and his club is taken by him to the next stage, while often inconsistent. Although the latter is competent on a higher degree Martinez is comparable in style and attributes to Busquets;, the former is not far behind in terms of his ability to do the simple things. Likewise, Khedira may be at a high rate than Martinez, however the features he gives aren't exactly the most crucial characteristics upon which you can create a team. For many his abundant quality, Toni Kroos is really a step behind Mesut Ozil and Andres Iniesta. Hoeness was positively right to pick out Iniesta as a person who can enhance Bayern considerably. The midfielder is very flexible and exceedingly reliable in big games. And as his 29th birthday ways, he still includes a few years before his fall begins. The sole downside to developing Iniesta into the Bayern group is that it would require a development switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3. Both Ozil and Iniesta would considerably increase the Bayern team.Denis Doyle/Getty Images Mesut Ozil would not need this kind of change; he can perform whilst the key playmaker in Bayern's present 4-2-3-1 startup. And he'd definitely be a noticable difference over Kroos. The ex-Bremen man's talent goes to waste at Real Madrid, where he performs second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo. When he goes out for Germany, Ozil is the middle of all approaching playa'and there, he seems like the best playmaker in the world. He'd have a similar role at Bayern, and could be anticipated to deliver on a similar degree. On the wings, Bayern have Franck Ribery and Thomas MAller. Hoeness' assessment ignored Cristiano Ronaldo, so Real Madrid's comparison is Angel di Maria. Barcelona have Pedro Rodriguez and Alexis Sanchez or an out-of-position David Property or Cesc Fabregas. Despite being younger than both,AMAller has scored more goals and given more assists than PedroAand Alexis in domestic league play, and has led to more goals in the Champions League. The German won in the Champions League closing and was prime scorer at the 2010 World Cup. He's the kind of player a coach ought never to consider replacing. Ribery has been a goal unit for Bayern since going to Munich in 2007, but he's certainly running lacking time, as his 30th birthday is approached by him. Villa is no older and will be an ill-suited alternative, while Fabregas is not undoubtedly a winger by nature. Di Maria is probably the best option alternative, but his individualism will make him a poor fit at Bayern. Backup would be likely played only as by him to Ribery and Muller at Bayern, who would be better to look elsewhere for an alternative for the Frenchman as he grows older. Ribery may ultimately must be replaced, but there are choices more skilled than Di Maria.Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno/Getty Images The last situation is that of middle forward, where Barcelona have just Messi, who was excluded from Hoeness' investigation. Real Madrid have Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain, while Bayern have Mario Gomez and Mario Mandzukic. While Benzema is a wonderful striker with the ability to score some spectacular targets, his strike rate is quite low for a striker on as Real Madrid such a staff. Confidence does not be exactly inspired by a record of eight goals in 22 appearances in La Liga this season, and since going to Spain he is won a great but simple 52 moments in 116 games. Higuain has found 102 situations to the mark in 181 Primera matches. Gomez includes a better hit rate (134 objectives in 231 games) in domestic play, and scored 20 times in the Champions League in both years preceding an injury-blighted 2012-13. The ex-Stuttgart man may have his faults, but neither Benzema nor Higuain did enough to prove herself as a critical step up. In conclusion, Hoeness has a good point because Barcelona and Real Madrid's participants are not just a step-up from those in Bayern's team, but his personal checks are questionable. Jordi Alba would be an luxury for Bayern, who'd greatly benefit not merely from the addition of Iniesta, but from the signings of Mesut Ozil and (although to a much lesser degree) Angel di Maria. Regardless, Hoeness' speculations came from the area of fantasy; Bayern may sign neither Alba or Iniesta. But his strong claims may soon be set to the test in the Champions League: If Bayern are to state Europe's most coveted trophy, they may experience equally Real Madrid and Barcelona on the way. Facebook Responds as Florida Gulf Coast Knocks North Park State Out of Contest

The 2013 NCAA tournament has been certainly one of unexpectedly crazy ratios. Probably no story has been more charming than that of No. 15 Texas Gulf Coast. Approximately 48 hours removed from their upset of No. 2 Georgetown, Florida Gulf Coast has defeated No. 7 Hillcrest State, 81-71. As the Eagles can make their first trip to the Sweet 16 in school history, a result. They are also the first No. 15 seed ever sold to attain the Sweet 16. ABelieve it or not, this comes throughout their first-ever NCAA event appearance. Bernard Thompson had 23 points to lead five Eagles who reached double figures. ABrett Comer also set up an unbelievable double-double with 10 points and 14 helps while Sherwood Brown had 17 points on 6-of-8 firing. Jamaal Franklin had 20 points for SDSU, who endured through 17 turnovers and were out-shot 56 percent to 44. The Eagles come in flight. Not only is this an enormous gain for the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, but for NCAA history. Observe that the Eagles will be the only team to stake claim to a great statistic, for why. ESPN Stats & Info, take it away. Want even more history? Twitter provided us with the data necessary. Twitter Effect For the first time in NCAA competition history, a No. 15 seed will be showing in the Sweet 16. Texas Gulf Coast is technically the mold that was broken by the squad. It is a group you will be telling your grandchildren about. For all those friends who tell you that they saw this coming, do not feel them. While a regular season victory was secured by Florida Gulf Coast over ACC winner Miami, few gave them a fair chance of developing. Just ask chances specialist Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight. Leading this group has been none other than 43-year-old mind instructor Andy Enfield. The Eagles are becoming a deal with this baseball head. Darren Rovell of ESPN provides information. For perspective, Kansas Jayhawks head mentor Bill Self signed a $52 million contract more than 10 years in September of 2012. Together may possibly assume, the Twittersphere erupted with a mixture of love and praise for Florida Gulf Coast. Perhaps no period of the game motivated the maximum amount of fascination with their swarming move crime. It is put by ryan Ruocco of ESPN New York best. That is the reality. Usually the negative voice of Twitter, Frank Isola of the New York Daily News presented an alternative take. Instead of praise and love, a quick jab was taken by him at the Miami media. You know,AsomethingAcompletely appropriate. For what it's worth, I think "The Ultimate Cinderella" is a excellent nickname. Luckily, Isola wasn't the only speech on Twitter. In reality, there clearly was an overwhelming amount of personalities proclaiming their new found love for the Eagles. Rely former national player of the season Jay Williams in on the bandwagon. He is not by yourself. Florida Gulf Coast will now enjoy their in-state competitor Florida Gators in the Sweet 16. More history will be made even by the Eagles by creating an in the Elite Eight, when they gain. Regardless of what happens, Florida Gulf Coast is becoming America's team.

Ravens Accept Terms With LB Dumervil On Five-Year Deal

The Baltimore Ravens have finally included a new player this offseason, and itas a large one, while the team has tweeted out they've arrived at terms with linebacker Elvis Dumervil. When his agent was late getting a contract to take a pay cut back to Denver the saga of Dumervil also being in the marketplace started two Fridays ago. The Broncos were required to reduce him, and his agent was fired by him, signing with Tom Condon. Wayne Rooney Has Shot at Redemption with England Against Montenegro

Rooney and England are set to play Montenegro Tuesday in Podgorica as the Three Lions continue their quest to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. For Rooney, however, more is at stake.

The last time Rooney and England played in Podgorica, Rooney was sent off for a late kick at Montenegro's Miodrag Dzudovic in an October 2011 match. England salvaged a 2-2 draw and qualified for Euro 2012, but Rooney's story lingered on.

Rooney, whose father had been arrested shortly before the match in relation to betting irregularities (via BBC Sport), drew a three-match UEFA ban, which was later reduced to two games. Those two games happened to come at Euro 2012, where England's challenge ended in the quarterfinals against Italy.

The incident and its aftermath brought back into question Rooney's ability to control himself in pressure-packed and important situations. In the 2006 World Cup, Rooney was sent off for a stamp on Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho as Cristiano Ronaldo famously played his own part in his then-teammate's dismissal with a wink.

Nearly seven years after Portugal and 17 months after Podgorica, Rooney has a chance to make the latter right. Halfway through qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, Montenegro lead Group H with 13 points, two ahead of England.

That makes Tuesday's match vital, and Rooney is one player on everybody's mind. "There is no doubt that Wayne Rooney is one of the best strikers in the world but we know from the last time England played here that he can sometimes play with a hot head," said Montenegro captain Mirko Vucinic (via the Daily Telegraph).

That doesn't quite amount to an admission that Montenegro will try to wind up Rooney, but it comes close. Regardless of how those words are interpreted, though, it's clear Rooney will be a key man for Montenegro on Tuesday.

Vucinic added: "He is a good player but it has been proved over the years that you can get a reaction out of him. England would have no chance with 10 men and I'm sure their coach will be telling them that."

England manager Roy Hodgson, meanwhile, said he thinks Rooney has matured. The stats seem to back that opinion: Rooney received only one yellow card in the Premier League last season, and even though he has drawn six yellows this campaign, he has not been sent off this season or last (via EPL Index).

"Wayne's played so many games, he's so experienced, I'm sure he's capable of writing off the incident," Roy Hodgson said per The Guardian. "He's paid his price. I'd like to think he'd forget all about it."

Maybe Rooney has not forgotten all about it. In his own words, Rooney has suggested that he's learned from his mistake.

"I didn't think: 'Right, I'm going to kick this player.' It just happened," Rooney said last summer at Euro 2012 (per The Guardian). "I understood straightaway it was a mistake."

With that realization in hand, Rooney's experience and goalscoring ability could combine to lethal effect for England.

Minnesota fires coach Tubby Smith

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota fired Tubby Smith on Monday, cutting ties with the veteran coach one day after the Golden Gophers lost to Florida in the NCAA tournament.

Athletics director Norwood Teague announced the decision Monday and said it was time for a "fresh set of eyes" on the program.

Smith was 124-81 (.610) in six seasons at Minnesota, helping to bring the program back to respectability and ramping up expectations for a team hit hard by an academic cheating scandal.

Smith won 20 games five times. But he went just 46-62 in Big Ten play and never finished higher than sixth in the conference. The Gophers made three NCAA tournament appearances under Smith. They beat UCLA this year before losing on Sunday.

"Tubby has had a long and distinguished career and we feel it's time for a fresh set of eyes for our student-athletes and our program in general," Teague said. "We are grateful to Tubby and his entire staff for their hard work and dedication to this university, our students and the entire Minnesota community."

Smith was welcomed with wild enthusiasm when left powerhouse Kentucky in 2007, hailed as the savior to a program that Dan Monson was never able to raise back out of the abyss created from a the academic fraud that ended up wiping out the team's Final Four appearance in 1997.

Smith won 20 games his first season and took the team to the NCAA tournament the following year, restoring some sense of pride to a team that at one time was the most popular draw in the Twin Cities.

But the success seemed to level off after that. The Gophers made the tournament again in 2010, missed it in 2011 and settled for an NIT bid last year as fans started to grow impatient.

"I want to thank the University of Minnesota and the people of Minnesota for giving me the opportunity to lead the Golden Gopher basketball program for six years," Smith said in a statement provided by the school. "Our staff did things the right way and will leave knowing that the program is in far better shape than when we arrived."

This year's team started off 15-1 and rose as high as No. 8, with wins over Michigan State, Illinois and Memphis during that run. But they quickly came back down to earth, losing seven of 10 games in Big Ten play and squeaking into the tournament as a No. 11 seed thanks in large part to a late-season win over then-No. 1 Indiana at home.

The Gophers handled UCLA in the second round of the tournament only to be thumped by Florida in the next round. A common refrain from fans was that the players, and the team, never seemed to improve as the season went on, instead either stagnating or regressing. The Gophers never finished with a Big Ten record above .500 and finished in seventh place or worse four times in his six seasons.

Undaunted, Smith always pointed to his reputation for running a clean program and the empty cupboard he inherited when he arrived. He has long been lobbying for a practice facility and improvements to historic, but outdated, Williams Arena and has said the lack of investment in the facilities have led to some setbacks in recruiting.

"I don't apologize or I don't defend anything," Smith said last week. "We do the best we can. We do a good job. That's why we're NCAA bound."

The decision to part with a big-name coach after a rare tournament victory for the program is a bold one for Teague, who is in his second year on the job. It requires a cash-strapped athletic department to raise $2.5 million for Smith's buyout.

With a bevy of highly touted recruits in the state, Teague is acting quickly partially to give a replacement time to forge relationships with high school players including Apple Valley point guard Tyus Jones, one of the most sought-after juniors in the country.

Teague and his top assistant, Mike Ellis, are considered to be plugged in to the college basketball world and are believed to have a strong list of candidates to replace Smith at the ready.

Teague came to Minnesota from Virginia Commonwealth, and it has been speculated almost since his arrival that he would eventually bring Shaka Smart with him. But Smart may have higher profile suitors waiting for him as well with openings already at UCLA and USC.

Other names that could come up are former Timberwolves coach and Golden Gopher alumnus Flip Saunders, Villanova's Jay Wright and Marquette's Buzz Williams.

Douglas Murray Trade: Are Sharks Giving Up on Joe Thornton Staff to Repair?

The San Jose Sharks made their first trade of the growing season on Monday by sending veteran defenseman Douglas Murray to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for two second-round draft picks, certainly one of which is a conditional choice (via TSN's Bob McKenzie and Pierre LeBrun). As you of the best defensive defenseman available on the trade industry, there clearly was likely to be curiosity about Murray from playoff contenders like the Penguins that require to add more size and fee killing to their collection ahead of the April 3 trade deadline. The real question that remains in the aftermath of this trade is: Are we seeing the beginning stages of the Sharks' expected rebuild and the conclusion of the Joe Thornton age in San Jose? That team began the year 7-0, nonetheless it has gone 6-11-6 since then and presently sits in ninth place in the Western Conference rankings. Murray is a good player, but his absence from the array will not have a major impact on the Sharks' likelihood of making the playoffs. However, this move could possibly be the first in what might become a fire sale in San Jose over the next eight days leading up to the trade contract. With the team no longer a genuine contender for the Stanley Cup and many of its players having contracts that expire this year or after the 2013-14 year, there is never been an improved time to repair this team than right now, specially when there is a high amount of talent at every position in the 2013 draft type. One of the worst choices a business could make is always to put a repair on hold and watch its aging experts eliminate a lot of their business value. Wilson has to be aggressive and make some important changes to his list that will assist the group deal for the playoffs today and in to the future. The Sharks are fortunate to have some really talented people to construct around moving forward, although they've plenty of aging veterans on their list. The Sharks have a remarkable core, as the chart above exhibits, but the team has one of many worst prospect pools in the category with hardly any top-tier prospects at the AHL, CHL and NCAA levels. The best method to restock the wardrobe is to trade experts for draft picks, prime prospects and young NHLers. Luckily for Wilson, he's a lot of masters to dangle in the trade market. Since Wilson was able to get two second-round picks for a defenseman like Murray (which was an incredible return for a, he should start the Sharks' repair quickly and capitalize on the high level of customers before the trade deadline. There are many clubs still in the playoff race at this time because of the shortened season, meaning the amount of suppliers on the trade market isn't high since a large amount of groups don't desire to postpone the white flag and rage their fanbase when attaining the postseason is still a practical goal. As one of the several sellers with valuable veterans at ahead and on the blue line, the Sharks can get full value for their forthcoming UFAs and other veterans, which is usually difficult to complete at the contract because groups tend to be hesitant to part with valuable resources for rentals and the amount of buyers is typically low. Who may Wilson provide to playoff challengers? Let us take a look at some masters who clubs could have curiosity about acquiring. If the Sharks continue steadily to collapse the standings and the team's offensive struggles don't go away soon, expect to see Wilson become among the most effective general managers in the category before the trade contract. He has a lot of good veterans who'd be able to handle many of the weaknesses that playoff contenders are dealing with, and his team must replace its ability and level throughout the organization with young players. Whenever you combine that with the power of the 2013 draft type, this is the perfect time for San Jose to restore and capitalize on the desperation of GMs who are under pressure from control to make the playoffs and claim for the Stanley Cup. If Wilson makes the right deals at this year's contract, the Sharks' restore might be a shorter process than expected. The Murray business doesn't guarantee that the Sharks will become sellers at the deadline because making the playoffs continues to be an essential target for 2013, however it has shown that Wilson could possibly get a great deal of importance for the masters and future UFAs on his roster if he wants to begin another chapter of San Jose's history today. Kompany: Man City may hit back at United - ESPN.co.uk

Vincent Kompany claims Manchester City will come straight back stronger after studying the lessons from their likely failure to protect this year to the Premier League title. Town currently walk Manchester United by 15 factors in the Premier League but leader Kompany is assured he and his team-mates will produce the right response next year. In the meantime the Belgium international, who is prone to make his recovery after 8 weeks on the sidelines with a calf damage against Macedonia on Tuesday, desires to raise this season to silverware in the FA Cup. He informed Sky Sports: "You always want to go for the titles and you always want to go for the most effective. It has been experienced by me in as every other person the exact same way. Our team has been wanted by me to complete well. "In basketball, finally, you always have to have a success and a loser so I believe we'll study from what happened and we'll grow stronger again. We still have a good run in the FA Cup." City are far nearer to third-placed Chelsea and fourth-placed Tottenham than United but Kompany demands he is perhaps not focused on the contenders who might take second position from them. He added: "I am not looking an excessive amount of. I know it is clichAd, but I think we should focus on our very own qualities and just look at every game and say: 'OK, we have got to be able to win this 1, so let us do it.' That ought to be our only aim."

March Insanity 2013: Has Louisville End up being the Unstoppable Group?

Louisville may be the hottest team in the 2013 NCAA tournament. The term aunstoppablea shouldn't be casually cast around to describe activities groups, but with just how Rick Pitinoas posse is beating up on their opponents recently, they may be getting close to gaining that tag. Earning Streak The Cardinals have won 15 of these last 16 games. That stretch extends back to a home win against Pitt on January 28, and their only loss came in a thriller against Notre Dame. The Big East tournament was won by louisville for the 2nd year in a line, and theyave won their first two March Madness games in decisive fashion. Kevin D. Cox/Getty Photographs Margin of Victory Louisville is not just beating clubs. They are consuming them. When ESPNas Andy Katz described their third-round conquer Colorado State, he said that aThe Rams were swallowed whole by the Cardinalsa pressure.a Over the last 12 games, Louisville has been winning by on average 18 points per game. And these games haven't been against mediocre teams. They contain Marquette and two pairs of victories against both Notre Dame and Syracuse. Kevin H. Cox/Getty Images Horrifying Defense Louisvilleas logo is producing persistent difficulty because of their opponents on protection. In their last dozen games, points have been scored more than 61 by no team, and two groups havenat reached half-century mark. The eighth-seeded Rams were forced by per the Associated PressA-LRB- h/t ESPN ), aLouisville right into a season-high 20 turnovers and out-rebounded Colorado State 29-24 -- no small thing considering the Rams came in with a nation-best plus-12 margin.a One of many good aspects of being able to perform defense is that you can certainly do that in every game. Unlike clubs that rely on their unpleasant firepower or firing precision, Louisville only has to carry maximum work and they'll be halfway towards a W every night. Andrew Lyons/Getty Images Powerful Offense Right now, Louisville is bringing it on the offensive end also. The Cardinals' largest catch through the 2012-13 time has been persistence on offense. Over the Big East tournament and their first two March Madness activities, the Cards are scoring six more points per game than they did in the normal time. They are shooting a sizzling 57 percent from the ground and getting to the point 20 times per game. ESPNas Stats and Information reported this about Louisvilleas bad production against CSU on Saturday: Louisville shot 47.6 per cent (10-21) outside the color Saturday, its best shooting portion from that distance within the last few four Men's Basketball Championships. Louisville scored 42 points in the paint Saturday and has scored 86 paint points in its first two games of the 2013 Men's Basketball Championship. The Cardinals would be the next team within the last few four competitions to score at least 40 points in the color in back-to-back activities (Vermont, 2011 and Kansas, 2012). If Louisville can keep their offensive production in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight activities a few weeks, itas safe to say that they will be headed to Atlanta for the Final Four. Andrew Lyons/Getty Images Unstoppable? No team in sports history was 100 percent easy. Everybody may have a half or perhaps a bad game. Louisville still has work to accomplish in the Midwest Region. They will be facing No. 12 seed Oregon next. From there, the Cards might face No. 2 seed Duke or No. 3 seed Michigan State. With the way that they're enjoying, Louisville will be headed for their 10th Final Four where they'll contend for the schoolas third NCAA Championship.
